Happy National Rum Day!
National Rum Day is August 16th!
|Light||AKA: white or silver. Nearly no color or heavy flavor. Aged the least and filtered to remove impurities and color. Use in mojitos, cojito or punch.|
|Gold||AKA: amber. Aged in wooden casks to give this style its signature color and sweeter, richer flavor. Use in pina coladas or cuba libre.|
|Black||AKA: dark. Aged the longest of any of the rums. Extended time on the cask gives it a dark color and deep smokey-sweet flavor. Most common are Myer's and Gosling's. Use in dark and stormys or hurricanes.|
|Spiced||Typically aged for the same length of time as gold or black rums, but spices and caramel colorings are added to give it its signature spicy sweet taste. Most popular: Captain Morgan.|
How are we celebrating? By making pitchers of cocktails of course! One of our faves: Planter's Punch
In a big cocktail shaker with ice, combine 8 ounces dark rum, 4 ounces of freshly squeezed lime juice, 2 ounces of grenadine, and 8 dashes of bitters. Shake that all up and strain into a pitcher with lots of ice. (A big shaker should just be able to handle all this. Alternatively, do it in two batches; or make it a frozen punch and run everything a blender.) Serve with four glasses and garnish with lime wheels. Cheers!
